Virtual reality is not exactly new, but it’s definitely more of A Thing than ever before – and together, New Things and the CHOICE Video team are investigating the power of VR storytelling. For our first story we went out to see something amazing: the solar array that CHOICE and the CSIRO have collaborated on, to test the real-world performance characteristics of that solar panels that Australian consumers can buy today. It’s an amazing facility staffed by dedicated scientists from the CSIRO Energy Centre in Newcastle, NSW.

For our first experiment in VR storytelling, we tried everything: 360, drone and cine footage, and binaural audio for full immersion. We have big plans for this story, and for the others to come.

You can watch the video below on your computer or mobile – hit play, and then you can drag around to look anywhere you like for a behind-the-scenes look at both the test array at the Newcastle facility and the work of our Video team out in the field.

And of course, if you have a VR headset, you can fire it up in the YouTube app for the full virtual reality experience.
